Sterling Bay Selects Walsh Construction & Riteway-Huggins Construction For Lincoln Yards Site Development
First Phase of Public Infrastructure Work on the 10- Year Development to Begin in 2020
CHICAGO – Sterling Bay, the Chicago-based real estate investment and development firm, has announced that it has engaged Walsh Construction, one of the city’s largest and most respected general contracting, construction management, and design-build firms, and Riteway-Huggins Construction, a minority-owned construction firm headquartered on Chicago’s south side, to provide contracting services for the infrastructure work to be completed at Lincoln Yards, the company’s 55-acre mixed-use development that will transform a former industrial corridor into an active City center for business, residential and entertainment. Walsh and Riteway-Huggins have formed a joint venture partnership to begin construction on initial public infrastructure improvements in 2020.
Both local leaders in design, build, finance, and operation services, Walsh and Riteway-Huggins have completed work on some of the most difficult and coordination-intensive infrastructure and vertical building projects in Chicago. Together, they bring expertise in pre-construction, underground storm and sewer work, water main reconstruction, electric signalization, and site preparation for vertical work to the project at Lincoln Yards.
“Sterling Bay is proud to partner with Walsh and Riteway-Huggins, two tried and true construction industry leaders with a track record of proven success, in kicking off one of Chicago’s most exciting and transformative developments at Lincoln Yards,” said Andy Gloor, CEO of Sterling Bay. “Walsh and Riteway-Huggins have the combined knowledge and expertise in public infrastructure work necessary to successfully manage the initial stages of development that will ultimately set the stage for the roll-out of the entire project.”
Following a competitive bid process, Walsh and Riteway-Huggins were selected in large part due to their collective commitment to excellence, timely delivery, and creating career opportunities for Chicago’s diverse workforce.
Walsh has an impressive and long history of delivering state-of-the-art projects on time throughout Chicago. Recently, they have completed notable public infrastructure projects that include the Chicago Riverwalk, the 606, and Maggie Daley Park, as well as multiple initiatives for the Chicago Transit Authority. The company exhibits a strong commitment to diversity, M/WBE participation, and community involvement on their projects. At the redevelopment of the old Cook County Hospital, Walsh has sponsored two exposure programs where local pre-apprentice candidates gain construction experience by shadowing trades of their choosing and acquiring industry-based training, resulting in potential sponsorship into specific trade unions.
“Walsh Construction is thrilled to partner with Sterling Bay and Riteway-Huggins to kick-off the first phase of Lincoln Yards,” said Dan Walsh Jr., president of Walsh Construction. ‘We look forward to working with our union subcontractor colleagues and local communities to safely lay the groundwork for a development that will benefit Chicago residents, businesses, and visitors.”
Riteway-Huggins Construction has completed numerous large-scale and landmark projects across Chicago including corporate office complexes, high-rise buildings, shopping centers, residential housing, health care facilities, railways, airports, and harbors. As a certified minority-owned business by the City of Chicago and founding member of Black Contractors United, the company is an industry leader in its commitment to equitable hiring practices that ensure diverse workforce development and are reflective of the many communities across the City.
“Lincoln Yards will be a new community built by the community; a historic development that will be a gateway of opportunity for Chicago businesses,” said Larry Huggins, CEO of Riteway-Huggins Construction. “We are proud to be a leading partner, and we are excited to work with surrounding aldermen, city officials, and the citizens of Chicago to drive opportunity for our neighbors in the workforce.”
